Celebrating Amelia’s Birthday 🎉

Our Founding Dane

For those who may not know, Amelia Air was inspired by one very special canine. Though Amelia the Great Dane was tragically neglected, she leapt into the cabin of the Heistad family’s Cessna when they came to rescue her! She loves to fly so much that they named her after another boundless aviator, Amelia Earhart.

Today, Amelia turns 8 years old - and the nonprofit we named after her turns 4! To celebrate, we’re taking off on 4 missions this weekend - and we’re hoping you’ll chip in below to support us!

Whether you donate $4, $8, or $48, we are so grateful for your support. You empower us to rescue more amazing animals like Amelia - so check out some of our latest rescue highlights from the summer!

🐈‍⬛ 15 Cool Cat Copilots!

It’s rare for us to have an all-cat flight, though we love flying them! On August 14, Paul and Petra took off from LA with 15 kittens, planning to meet another pilot halfway to Portland, Oregon. When he was unable to leave his home airport due to wildfire smoke, Paul & Petra happily completed the entire flight, safely delivering all 15 kittens to the Portland Humane Society!

Riley before…

On July 22, Dean and Katy flew 9 lucky dogs from an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky to our rescue partners, the Humane Society of Atlantic City. Pictured here is Riley, a Great Pyrenees mix who was scared of her own shadow after spending so much time in the shelter.

…Riley adopted!

Less than two weeks later, and 6 of the 9 dogs had been adopted - including Riley! After a spa day and a little time to unwind, Riley came out of her shell. She found the perfect forever home where she’ll be treasured for the rest of her days!

⛑️TIPS FOR AGING PETS

Amelia is turning 8, which is a pretty advanced age by Great Dane standards! Are your pets aging too? To keep them healthy and happy, read these tips from our very own flying Dogtor, Dr. Adi Chatow!

🦮 Your pet’s mobility may change as they age, but it’s still important to keep them moving. Try shortening or slowing your regular walks, and adding low-impact exercises like swimming!

🏠 Reconsider your pet’s routine. Is it time to switch to a senior-friendly pet food, find an elevated bed, block the stairs with a baby gate, or get paw grips to help your pet on slippery surfaces?

🦷 Keep an eye on their gums and teeth! Periodontal disease is very common in senior pets, so brush their teeth regularly, schedule dental cleanings with your vet, and provide softer chew toys as pets get older.

🥵 Older pets are more susceptible to temperature extremes. Provide a coat on cold walks, avoid excessively hot pavement, and remember to keep their rest areas comfortable!
