Biggest Rescue Day Ever in Adopt-a-Pet Month!

At Amelia Air, October is one of our favorite times of year: we get to celebrate Adopt-a-Pet Month, Pit Bull Awareness Month, and Halloween all at once!

Thanks to the support of all our amazing new donors, volunteers, and supporters, October now represents a new milestone for our work to save animals. Last week, the Amelia Air Force completed our biggest single day of life-saving rescues to date, flying 56 pets to safety on both coasts of the US!

Read on to learn about our best rescue day ever, plus how to celebrate all the October fun while keeping your furry friends safe 🎃

If you can, please donate a Halloween trick or treat so we can make the last 2 months of 2023 our most impactful yet!

Our Biggest Rescue Day Ever 🎉

🐈‍⬛ 21 Halloween Kitties🐈

October 17 started at daybreak on the west coast. Pilots Paul & Petra loaded up 21 adorable kittens from Pasadena Humane for a relay flight with new pilot Andrew all the way to Oregon Humane Society! Photographer Robert Sturman (@robertsturman) volunteered his unbelievable artistry to capture this mission - be sure to check out some more of his incredible photos on our Instagram!

24 Anniversary Dogs 🐶

Meanwhile, our east coast team was celebrating a very special milestone: Dean’s 25th anniversary of becoming a pilot 👨‍✈️ Dean and Katy had the perfect way to celebrate: flying 24 dogs from a Kentucky shelter to safety in New Jersey! These beautiful pups will be available with our friends at East Coast Paws n Claws Rescue and Voorhees Animal Orphanage!

11 Emergency Pittie Pups!

Back on the west coast, Paul and Petra were ready to fly home after handing over the 21 kittens to volunteer pilot Andrew! But then they got an emergency call: 11 abandoned two-week old puppies were going to be put down at a rural shelter that did not have the resources to bottle feed them around the clock. You’ll have to head to our Instagram to see the amazing story of what happened when we flew them to Los Angeles!

That’s it, folks - 56 pets, three missions, two planes, one amazing rescue day for the books!

A MESSAGE FROM PIT BULL AMBASSADORS RYLEE & NALA 🐶

October is Pit Bull Awareness Month! All the negative press, stigma and stereotypes around pit bulls tragically result in lower adoption rates for these incredible family dogs. Since 2007, October has been a time to celebrate and educate people about how amazing bully breeds are! Amelia Air Force rescue pups and professional snugglers Rylee and Nala (above) want everyone to remember: pet behavior is the responsibility of the pet parent, not an attribute of any breed!

⛑️ PET SAFETY TIPS FOR HALLOWEEN

Some pets, like Amelia Air alum Toby here (aka Tobacca), love dressing up! Others… not so much. Read on to learn some practical tips on keeping pets safe and happy during Halloween from our very own vet and pilot, Dr. Adi Chatow!

👻 Costumes are cute, but pets may not like them! Be mindful of your pet’s body language when you dress them up. If your pet tolerates or even enjoys costumes, ensure their outfit does not interfere with their vision, hearing, or movement.

🍫 Candy, decorations, and jack-o-lanterns can all pose a threat to curious pets. Be sure to keep your Halloween decor out of reach, unless you find some pet-friendly treats for them to enjoy!

🥷 Dressing up might be a treat for us, but it will trick your pet! You and other people may look, smell, or sound different in costume, so please leave your pets at home in a safe, quiet space instead of taking them out in the stressful street!

🩺 Some pets don’t appreciate frequent door bell rings (speaking of barking and howling!) nor new house visitors. If your furry housemates get easily anxious, try to keep them away from these triggers or consult with your veterinarian regarding anti-anxiety remedies!
